The Culture and Design Lab is an
Indigenous learning, development and strategy
company that was established in 2022.

We help professionals to disrupt systemic racism in the workplace and create positive social change for Māori and Pacific peoples.

Our “Bridging Cultural Perspectives” framework includes nine steps that create meaningful change and lead any organisation from systemic racism to systemic disruption.  Our services focus on moving organisations along this continuum.

Not every organisation is in the same place. We pick you up exactly at the step your organisation is at and guide you through the remaining journey.

Anti-racism education that is delivered in collaboration with specialist organisations.  In this step, we…

  • work on creating safe spaces to discuss sensitive topics

  • understand barriers that hold systemic racism in place

  • tap into personal emotions and experiences and create a shared narrative

  • create better awareness of the organisation’s current state and aspired state

  • open people to change and help them embrace the journey

  • create enthusiasm and a positive attitude towards change and learning

  • help understand the workings of power that drive systemic racism

  • deliver the context for understanding indigenous struggles for equality

  • explain the term “ally” and “allyship” and how that affects the organisation

Strategies for understanding and minimising the effect of bias.  In this step, we…

  • learn to identify our own unconscious biases and those of others

  • look at the effects that unconscious bias has on the workplace

  • discuss examples of best practices

  • discover ways to challenge their thinking

  • build new ways of thinking

Conducting your organisation’s cultural audit and supporting you with planning and implementing strategic communications. 

In this step we are working with Manu Communications, delivering a series of workshops that assess your cultural landscape in a cultural audit and help you implement a strategic communications framework. 

Giving you access to a cultural expert directory where you can find the right experts for your needs and get better quality experts vetted by us.

Introducing Poly UX, a one-day workshop that uses a lean canvas and our Poly UX sorting cards to help you identify your cultural intelligence barriers.

Collaborating with Puhi Creatives, a team of experienced designers that helps you “indigenise” your brand with meaningful and culturally correct Maori & Pacific designs.
